General notes

Is it free to submit my website?

Yes — completely. Submitting your site to the Datum index is free, with no fee now and none later. Open the submission form, enter your URL, choose a sheet, and you are on the drawing.

What is Datum?

Datum is a free web index: a hand-drafted directory of 796 websites across 22 sheets. A person drafts each site onto the drawing, so you can read the open web like an index instead of an algorithm.

How are sites organised?

By sheet. Every site is drawn onto one of 22 sheets — from computing to travel — so related entries sit together on the same drawing and are easy to scan.

How do I submit my site?

Go to the submission page, enter your site’s URL, choose the sheet that fits, and submit. If you leave the description blank we’ll fetch one for you. It takes under a minute.

Do you review submissions?

We do. New submissions are read by a person before they’re drafted in, and we revise the sheets now and then to strike off links that have gone offline.

Notes on this index

Datum is a free web index — a hand-drafted drawing of the open web. We draw up working websites across twenty-two sheets, recording each one by hand rather than by algorithm.

There is nothing to install and nothing to pay. Open a sheet, scan the entries, and follow the ones that fit. When you run a site of your own, you can submit it to the index in under a minute — free, and free to stay.

It is search drawn up like a set of plans: instead of a blank box and a billion guesses, you get a small, legible index that a person actually drafts.
